The island is privately owned by Dean Brothers Ltd, and has been since 1869 when John Markham Dean bought Pebble and a few neighbouring islands.

Pebble Island is also known for being where the first land-based action took place during the 1982 Falkland’s war when the SAS raid disabled 11 Argentinian aircraft. You can see the commemorative memorial to the Argentinians who lost their lives on Pebble. The Coventry Cross, on First Mountain, is a memorial to those lost at sea when HMS Coventry went down off the north of the island.
